The National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting JEE Main 2027 in two sessions, one in January 2027 and one in April 2027. The online application for Session 1 is open on the official website and closes on 22 November 2026. This guide sets out the dates, fees, exam format and application rules that NTA has published, so you can apply correctly the first time.
Checked against NTA's notices dated up to 30 October 2026 and the 2027 Information Bulletin on 1 November 2026. NTA can revise dates and rules, so confirm anything important on the official website before you act.
What JEE Main is used for
JEE Main has two papers. Paper 1 is for admission to B.E. and B.Tech programmes at the NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded technical institutions, and institutions funded or recognised by participating state governments. It is also the eligibility test for JEE Advanced, which is the route to the IITs. Paper 2 is for B.Arch and B.Planning courses.
You apply for one session at a time and pay the fee for that session. NTA will announce a separate window for Session 2 later; a candidate who applied for Session 1 can use the same application number for it.
Session 1 dates (January 2027)
- Online application: 24 October to 22 November 2026, up to 11:50 PM. The last date to pay the fee is also 22 November 2026, up to 11:50 PM.
- Late submission: 23 to 26 November 2026, up to 11:50 PM, with an extra late fee of ₹500.
- Corrections to application details: 27 to 29 November 2026, on the website only.
- City intimation slip: 30 December 2026.
- Admit card download: 13 January 2027.
- Exam dates: 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027.
Session 2 is planned for April 2027. The Information Bulletin gives a tentative schedule: applications from 5 January to 3 February 2027, corrections from 8 to 10 February, admit cards on 25 March, and exams from 2 to 7 April 2027.
Exam fee for Session 1
These are the fees NTA lists for centres in India. They are payable by credit card, debit card, net banking or UPI.
- One paper (Paper 1, or Paper 2A, or Paper 2B): General ₹1,000 for male and ₹800 for female candidates; Gen-EWS and OBC (NCL) ₹900 for male and ₹800 for female candidates; SC, ST, PwD and PwBD ₹500; third gender ₹500.
- More than one paper (for example Paper 1 together with Paper 2A): General, Gen-EWS and OBC (NCL) ₹2,000 for male and ₹1,600 for female candidates; SC, ST, PwD and PwBD ₹1,000, and ₹1,000 for third gender.
- Late fee: ₹500 on top of the category fee, the same for every category.
- Processing charges and GST are paid by the candidate where they apply. Fees for centres outside India are higher and are listed in the bulletin.
Exam pattern
- Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Each subject has 20 multiple-choice questions in Section A and 5 numerical-answer questions in Section B, so 75 questions in all.
- Paper 2A (B.Arch): Mathematics (20 + 5 questions), an aptitude test of 50 questions, and a drawing test of 2 questions, 77 in all. The drawing test is done on paper; the rest is computer based.
- Paper 2B (B.Planning): Mathematics (20 + 5 questions), an aptitude test of 50 questions and 25 planning questions, 100 in all.
- NTA states that there is negative marking for incorrect answers in both Section A and Section B.
- Each 3-hour paper runs in two shifts, 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM (IST). Candidates taking both B.Arch and B.Planning get 3 hours 30 minutes.
- The exam is offered in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
Who can apply
There is no age limit for JEE Main 2027. Candidates who passed Class XII or an equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, or who are appearing in 2027, can take the exam whatever their age. The institutions you want to join may have their own age rules for admission, so check those separately. The bulletin lists the recognised qualifying examinations, which include the Class 12 exams of recognised central and state boards.
Before you fill the form
- Log in with your own DigiLocker, JanParichay or e-Pramaan (MeriPehchaan) account. NTA says this avoids mismatches in identity and biometric details at later stages.
- Complete Re-KYC through DigiLocker before you start, so your latest details are fetched into the form.
- Make sure your name and date of birth in the form are exactly as on your Class 10 certificate or marksheet.
- Apply online only, on the official website. Use an email address and mobile number that belong to you or your parent or guardian, because NTA sends all communication there.
- Keep your Aadhaar details (photograph, name, date of birth and address) up to date. NTA's bulletin advises this, and says the details are used for verification.
- For the live photograph, switch on your camera or connect a webcam. If your device has none, you can scan a QR code with a phone or tablet instead. Use a white background and good lighting, and keep at least 80% of your face visible, with ears showing and no mask.
- Upload your own photograph, signature and certificates. NTA will not allow corrections to these once the correction window has closed.
Made a mistake? Fresh application and correction rules
On 30 October 2026 NTA said that candidates may submit a fresh application form for Session 1, even if they already have an application number or have paid the fee. These conditions apply:
- Only the last form for which the fee has been paid and the confirmation page generated counts. If you start a fresh form but do not finish payment and the confirmation page, your earlier completed form stays valid.
- Each fresh form gets a new application number, and you must enter all details and upload your photograph, signature and documents again.
- The deadlines do not change: complete the fresh form and pay by 22 November 2026, or from 23 to 26 November with the late fee.
- The fee paid for the earlier form is not refunded and not adjusted against the new one.
- If you only need to change certain details, NTA advises using the correction facility (27 to 29 November 2026) instead of a fresh form.
- Holding more than one application number does not allow you to appear more than once in a session. Appearing, or trying to appear, with more than one number is treated as unfair means. Simply holding more than one number, without appearing with them, is not.
